The oak trees are almost bare, and the days are getting colder. With winter already here, you might be looking for your next winter coat or sweater. Why not visit one of the many thrift stores in Stellenbosch? Stellenbosch is home to a range of different second-hand establishments to help you beat fast fashion while staying cosy this season.
Pro-tip: Make your trip extra productive and donate or sell any items that you no longer wear.
The Hospice Shop
3 Borcherd Road, Stellenbosch
The Hospice Shop offers two different clothing store options, namely:
- The Bargain Shop
Positioned at the back of the Hospice Shop, the Bargain Shop offers a variety of hidden gems for low prices – including clothing, décor, shoes, and miscellaneous items. It usually requires some searching to find your new favourite piece. You can, however, view their active Facebook page for glimpses of new items.
- Boutique Shop
The Boutique Shop is a more curated shop, where the best donated items are handpicked for display. Here you will find clothing, shoes, and accessories. There is a relative balance between female and male options, and while prices are higher, it corresponds to the value.
Ons Winkel
121 Andringa Street, Stellenbosch
Similar to the Hospice Shop, Ons Winkel is an NPO where you can choose from a range of donated items. Ons Winkel has been known for some great décor finds, and while the shop is small, it is always worth a peek. Visit Ons Winkel for clothing, shoes, décor, and miscellaneous items.
Malaki.Second Chances
36 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch
Malaki.Second Chances is a consignment store in Stellenbosch Central with unique and beautiful clothing, shoes, and accessory items. The boutique is well organised and has a changing room. Source some quality pieces here or have the store sell some of your old favourites.
Dog Box Charity Shop
Devon Valley Road, Stellenbosch
Trading hours:
Tuesday: 9am – 3pm
Saturday: 9am – 12pm
Even though it is a short drive outside of Stellenbosch, The Dog Box Charity Shop, an NPO (part of The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch), is worth the visit. You might have to do some digging, but with low prices, it could very well be worth it. Make your trip extra special and plan it for a Saturday. On Saturdays, The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch hosts a dog-walking event where you can take a shelter pup for a walk in the vineyards across the road.
Thrifting may take a bit longer but is extremely rewarding. Every time you get impatient, just remind yourself of the importance of slow fashion. Look for items that still have some life in them and do not get fooled by the price – you only need what you will actually wear. Happy thrifting!
