Stellenbosch is a town that loves deals. This is most probably driven by the student and young adult population. On The House (a new app that allows users to view specials taking place on specific days of the week) was reviewed in the previous post – Reviewing Advertising Platforms in Stellenbosch (Pt.1). The following post will review the popular Instagram page, @stellies_does_deals. Just over a year ago, @stellies_does_deals launched a new website where they list all of Stellenbosch’s deals, however, it was not accessible on the day of this review.

The Instagram page, @stellies_does_deals, posts two to three posts per day that highlight promotions in Stellenbosch. Story reels, with the days of the week as titles, can be seen on @stellies_does_deals.  This allows viewers to view a specific day’s promotion. Contrary to On The House, @stellies_does_deals does not exclusively cover restaurant promotions. Content about tattoo parlours, hair salons, and fashion can also be viewed on the page.

While good promotions are listed within these categories and elsewhere on the page, not all promotions happening around town are mentioned. It seems like @stellies_does_deals has some specific partners, as the same establishments are featured continuously. The website was faulty so no review can be given about its listings. 

This Instagram page, however, is good for assessing crowd favourites through polls where different establishments are pinned against each other. The different categories can be seen within their Instagram stories, where different food options, such as pizzas or breakfasts, are surveyed to find the public’s favourite. This is a great feature for anyone new in town looking for dining recommendations. For example, @stellies_does_deals has graphics available with wine tasting price compilations. The way the information is grouped together makes it easy for someone to choose where they want to go.

It can be concluded that both apps serve distinct purposes. On The House is specifically dedicated to restaurant specials in town. Alternatively, @stellies_does_deals shares selected promotions on a variety of products and services in town while also including an element of public opinion.

@stellies_does_deals benefits:

  • Wide range of categories
  • Inclusion of public opinion to help with decision making
  • Posts of various promotions available around town
  • Instagram’s function to turn on post notifications to view new posts

@stellies_does_deals room for improvement:

  • More comprehensive list of promotions featured
  • More up-to-date compilations and surveys in the story reels
