Mornings in Stellenbosch offer a glimpse of the diversity of the inhabitants of the town. Students on the way to class, businesspeople heading to the office, or tourists on sightseeing excursions are spoilt for choice when selecting a breakfast spot in Stellenbosch to get their day underway.

We introduce a few of the varied establishments to visit for the first meal of your day.

The Blue Crane and the Butterfly

Mike Jones and his wife, Chrisna, started The Blue Crane and the Butterfly 10 years ago. After serving their loyal patrons from the venue in Dorp Street for most of this time, they re-launched their coffee shop in the Oude Bank Building in October 2022. Mike says that there are many things that he loves about the new location. “I would say my favourite aspect of it is that it reminds me of my favourite areas back in Glasgow or London. The almost “secretive” entrance down the cobbled lane leads you to this beautiful space that is spacious, yet intimate,” he explains. The varied menu is complemented by the specials board, which allows Mike the opportunity to experiment and be creative. His personal recommendation is their Chorizo Breakfast, described as “perfectly spiced chorizo sausage in a tomato relish with scrambled egg on sourdough toast”.

Ya-Ya Café

At 8 Dorp Street, near the Rupert Museum, you will find Ya-Ya Café. Located in an old, character-filled building, Ya-Ya is friendly and inviting. The food is made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Breakfast is served all day, and the varied menu offers something for every taste. The options vary from traditional items such as omelettes and French toast to free-range chicken livers and quinoa porridge. There is also an extensive list of freshly pressed juices and kombucha to complete your meal in a healthy fashion.

Banhoek Chilli Oil Company

If you are willing to travel beyond the borders of town, the Banhoek Chilli Oil Company at the entrance to Kylemore, on the other side of Helshoogte, is worth the drive. The setting is beautiful, and the restaurant caters to cyclists seeking nourishment after conquering the surrounding mountain trails, as well as families with kids who enjoy the extensive play area adjacent to the restaurant. The breakfast menu is simple but offers something for every palate. The Chilli Oil tasting experience, presented at your table, will turn the excursion into even more of an experience.
