While frequenting the local grocers you might have noticed an increase in food prices. They appear to be adding up more than ever and Stellenbosch has not escaped this inflation. This is largely due to a huge increase in food prices nationally (and even globally). There are some solutions, however, to navigate this inflation and mitigate the negative effects.
Nationally, food prices have increased, as would be expected from general inflation. However, the recent increases seem more obvious due to large and frequent increases. The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group (in Business Tech, 2022) found that, when considering the average food basket a household might use, it increased by 11.3% over the span of a year.
Numerous factors influence the rise of food prices, with the uncertain economic climate on a national and global level being a strong contributor. While there is a need for holistic solutions, especially considering the power distribution, an area of focus should be navigating the grocers to ensure nutrition and satisfaction on a tighter budget.
Some tips would include:
Tuesday specials at Food Lover’s Market
Food Lover’s, situated in Eikestad Mall, is probably the best shop to go to when shopping on a budget – especially when considering the abundance of deals that seem to be running. On Tuesdays, Food Lover’s Stellenbosch runs their 10 Buck Tuesday, where items are sold (individually or bundled) for ten rand a unit.
The informal traders outside of Pick n Pay, Bird Street
These merchants are conveniently positioned should you decide to do your groceries at Pick n Pay, and they offer fruit and vegetables at good prices! This may be due to the decrease in middlemen within the distribution line, thereby decreasing the associated costs.
Use specialty cards
While this tip may seem obvious, many people still do not have a Checkers Xtra Savings or Pick n Pay Smart Shoppers card. These cards come in handy when stocking up for the month as you often save when buying bulk. Also, consider cards for Cotton On or Clicks due to the cash-back benefits.
The increase in food prices may seem daunting – and it certainly is – however you do not have to feel defeated. While we have nationally felt the effects of food inflation, within our local context there are some ways to mitigate the effects. While these may seem obvious, it is a good reminder to stay budget-savvy and perhaps try out some new promotions!
