Summer is finally here, the work year is ending, and exam season is drawing to a close. What better way to celebrate than by going outside and soaking up some rays? Stellenbosch has plenty of cool spots to offer for letting off some steam – quite literally (summer in Stellies is no joke!). Why not try these spots the next time adventure calls?

Coetzenburg dam(s)

You would be surprised to know how many people have not yet ventured to the dam – it feels like a cult classic amongst students, even a rite of passage. Even if swimming is not your thing, going to one of the dams is an important Stellenbosch activity. There are two to choose from, one older and one newer.

– Farm Dam

This is the original swimming spot in Stellenbosch, offering trees for shade and a nice muddy surface. Since the introduction of Ertjieskloof Dam (more below) this dam has mostly been abandoned, however, it still holds a certain charm. This dam is also great for a picnic, sunset or duck watching – especially now as ducklings hatch.

To get to the dam, you have to move over the hill past the equestrian stables (if you walk long enough you will eventually see it).

Pro-tip: Look out for the look-out near the bicycle ramp. PS you will find some notes left (some profane!) to remind of the previous visitors of this space – always an intriguing read.

This dam is a relatively new addition to Stellenbosch (circa November 2021) and has become a favourite spot for leisure. Find this dam as you go up Coetzenburg (entrance by the sports field) and begin the hiking trail (it will be on your right). The dam is engineered with black rocks around, providing a cosy spot to sunbathe after a dip – beware they can be spiky and somewhat tricky to navigate.

Koloniesland Trail (please excuse the problematic historical name)

This trail takes you along the Eersterivier River and makes a great walking, running, cycling, or picnic spot (although you might have to embrace adventure to find the perfect one as they can be hidden). Walk along trees and listen to the rippling water here for a great escape from Stellenbosch’s hustle and bustle while still being within walking distance from everything. Stellenbosch has so many perfect spots for leisure within walking distance that it would be a shame to miss any. When the sun is out and you are perhaps feeling bored of your same-old, same-old, remember this list and your inner adventurer!
