The town lifestyle often gets a bit too much to handle, and we need to reconnect with nature. Thankfully, in Stellenbosch, you don’t have to go far to get back in touch with nature. There’s a plethora of invigorating options available in the great outdoors, from scenic jogging and dog-walking routes to romantic sunset cocktails and unforgettable date ideas.

Jan Marais Nature Reserve

Jan Marais Nature Reserve – Author’s Own

Situated at the end of Victoria Street, Jan Marais Nature Reserve is perfect for a quick breakaway. Free to enter and open from early morning to around seven in the evening, the reserve offers multiple attractions. There is a sculpture garden, perfect for art lovers or picnic parties under the over-arching trees. There is a labyrinth for meditative walks, and the dam is not too far off. Wildlife roams the reserve, from tortoises to duikers. The reserve is ideal for walking your dog and will offer you peace of mind.

Promenade along Eerste Rivier

Eerste Rivier – Author’s Own

Jogging and cycling paths, as well as a promenade for long walks, the Eerste Rivier route is a Stellenbosch favourite. Follow the river, and you have found a perfect afternoon walk or a good cycling route. Find secret swimming spots along the river and say hi to the cats that like to sunbathe on the banks of the river. You can even end the walk at Auntie Sophie’s for a nice meal.

Coetzenburg

Coetzenburg – Author’s Own

Everyone has heard of Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch, and it is the perfect location for any picnic, sundowner, swim or hike. The hike up Coetzenburg to, at least, the second cross is almost considered compulsory by Stellenbosch students and offers a fantastic view of the city of oaks. Accessed by a path close to the Coetzenburg stadium, the quick climb up the hill is perfect for viewing the stars and sunsets over the town.

Botanical Gardens

The Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens are renowned around town. The gardens are pristine; greenhouses, waterlily ponds and the famous bonsai section are all on show. Take a book and shade yourself under bamboo or ferns, and maybe sit down for a bite at the Katjiepiering café before you leave. It is also a cute date location (if anyone needs any ideas).
